About me

Leadership, curiosity, and the work itself.

I’m David Pfeffer. I build software and engineering teams, and I like staying close enough to the work to understand what matters.

A leader who stays hands-on

Engineering leader and former startup CTO with more than 20 years in software and fintech and more than a decade leading teams. I manage engineers and engineering managers, hire and mentor technical leaders, and stay hands-on with architecture, performance, reliability, and delivery.

At THINKalpha, I joined as the first product engineer and helped grow the engineering organization. Today I’m Director of Software Engineering, working across people, product strategy, architecture, and production operations.

I believe technical leadership includes being able to work through the details: a protocol edge case, an unreliable service, a migration that needs evidence, or an explanation that helps another engineer move forward.

Experience beyond one kind of software

I’ve co-founded companies in consumer trading, B2B software, and connected transportation. I’ve also taught programming and systems at Stevens Institute of Technology and worked on industrial devices in the field.

Those experiences connect. A system has to work for its users, a team needs clear decisions, and a good explanation can be as useful as a good implementation.

What ByteNik is

ByteNik Solutions LLC is the business behind my first-party apps. This site brings those apps together with my open-source projects and professional background.

Dark Sky Clock and Garden Eye are independent projects shaped by practical questions about the world around me. My workbench also includes tools for Home Assistant, a Slack recognition bot, and public engineering investigations.

More about my work

My resume covers my professional experience, and my workbench collects public projects and engineering investigations. You can also find me on LinkedIn and GitHub.

I’m not accepting new bespoke contract projects right now.
